Sadly, I read yet another opinion advocating military conscription ("Bring back draft before next attack," Letters, Sunday).
The 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states in Section 1: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."
Military conscription is involuntary servitude. If the drafted individual goes AWOL, he becomes a runaway slave who will be imprisoned when caught. It would be nice if people actually treated the U.S. Constitution like it is the highest law in the land.
The draft is clearly unconstitutional. How can any patriotic American advocate violating it?
